Experience

I presently tutor Math for a highly rated firm. I also tutor my own children in Trigonometry and Calculus. In my experience, students become more confident and proficient in math as they learn to divide a problem into smaller problems, identify the underlying concepts and then proceed to solution using those concepts. Then with neatness, organization, efficiency and error correction, students integrate the solutions of the smaller problems to solve the original problem. With time, practice --- and patience --- they will gain confidence and proficiency. Upon graduating with a Master’s degree in Math, I began a career in aerospace where I discovered many different uses of math in the real world. My experience at that time inspired me to pursue another Master’s degree years later, this time in Electrical Engineering, after which I returned to aerospace as an engineer/scientist. I have taught math and math-related subjects at the freshman and sophomore college levels. Teaching positions include: Mathematics Professor, Los Rios Community College District, Sacramento, 1990-1991 Teaching Assistant, E.E. Program, UC Davis, 1987-1988 Mathematics Instructor, CSU Fullerton, 1978-1980 Relevant college courses I have taken include: Calculus 1, 2 and 3, Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, Probability and Statistics, Numerical Analysis, Complex Analysis, Physics 1, 2 and 3, Engineering Mechanics - Dynamics, Network Analysis 1 and 2, Electronics 1 and 2, Electromagnetics and Control Systems. I also served twice as proofreader of a university textbook on complex analysis.

Hobbies

During my career in aerospace engineering, the work I enjoyed most was analyzing and solving complex problems, especially when they involved mathematical modeling and simulation. This type of work required attention to the finest detail. I enjoy many other activities including team sports, running, hiking, bicycling, woodworking, computer build and repair, playing guitar, leading Bible study and song for adults and children, or just spending time with my wife, children, grandchildren and friends on our small ranch in the foothills of Placer County.
